I have had the opportunity over the last 30 years that I have been specializing in the Caribbean and Mexican Caribbean to stay at many resorts. There are a few that have made a lasting impression!
I was at this new resort in May, 2019. A brand new, Hotel Xcaret is located in the Riviera Maya south of Cancun and while it’s an all-inclusive resort it is more of a destination rich in history, art and entertainment. Xcaret takes the all-inclusive concept an extra step in that guests have included UNLIMITED access to 8 eco/adventure parks in the area. This resort is a must for active and adventure-minded families and couples.
Not an ordinary hotel, but a collection of private villas, cottages and beach huts set among tropical gardens, private beaches and secluded coves. Located in the Ocho Rios area of Jamaica, Golden Eye was the home of Ian Fleming of James Bond fame. When I was there I saw the actual desk where he wrote many of the Bond novels.
This is a new resort so I have not had the opportunity to visit yet. But as a Parrothead it appeals to me. Inspired by the lyrics and lifestyle of singer Jimmy Buffett, Margaritaville Beach Resort is a state of mind where flip-flops are considered uniform. Located on a private cove at the beginning of famous Seven Mile Beach, the resort includes daily breakfast, lunch & dinner and standard brand beverages. Enjoy a Cheeseburger in Paradise while sipping on a Land Shark Beer!
An iconic, small luxury hotel located in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, owned and operated by the same family for over 50 years. Jamaica Inn continues to be a place of relaxed glamour and timeless elegance. All rooms are painted in a custom Wedgewood Blue unique to the resort. Rich in history, the resort has hosted Errol Flynn, Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller, Noel Howard and Ian Fleming. Sir Winston Churchill also visited the Inn frequently staying in the White Suite where he often created his water colors.
I’m often asked which island is my favorite in the Caribbean. I always answer “Anguilla”, a tiny island located 30 minutes by ferry from French St. Martin. Some of the friendliest people in the Caribbean reside on Anguilla. The Cap Juluca resort wraps around Maundays bay with the whitest, sugar-fine beach I have ever seen in the Caribbean. Many amazing restaurants can be enjoyed in Anguilla, all price ranges, from small, toes-in-the-sand beach grills to 5 star dining. Pimms at Cap Juluca, a local institution, is known as one of the most romantic restaurants on the island.
Located in Negril, Jamaica, every room at this all-inclusive resort is unique – bursting with character, charm and heart-stopping coastal views perched on some of the most spectacular caves in the Caribbean. Not to be missed, Blackwells Rum Bar. Entered by taking a coral staircase, crossing a wooden footbridge, then arriving at a secret cave to taste the finest of Jamaican rums. The Caves Spa? Yes! Treatments in candle-lit caves or on the ocean’s edge.
