St Kitts & Nevis

ST KITTS – St. Kitts was once known as the Gibraltar of the West Indies for its domination of 18th- century colonial battles. The island rose to become the world’s leader in sugarcane cultivation, an inspiration for the industrial revolution in the process. A former slave-ship-captain-turned-preacher was inspired to write the beloved folk song, “Amazing Grace”. And explorer Christopher Columbus was so taken by the island’s natural beauty and saintly shape that he named it after the patron saint of all travelers, St. Christopher. (Somewhere along the line the baptismal name he so reverently bestowed would be affectionately shortened to St. Kitts.)

NEVIS – The 1600s saw the British colonize the island, initially creating conflict with the French over the lush, green, mountainous landscape of Nevis – however, later the two European countries settled peacefully and lived together in harmony. Alexander Hamilton, born on Nevis in 1755, later migrated to the United States eventually serving as an advisor to George Washington who appointed him as the first Secretary of the Treasury. Today, Nevis continues to celebrate its rich history and culture through a series of events that take place throughout the year, allowing visitors and locals alike to celebrate the food, the people and the natural elements of the island, from swims, runs and agriculture tours, to cooking festivals and music events.
